Kerala State Museum at Thrissur
Kerala State Museum is located at Town Hall Road in Chembukavu, 2 km from Thrissur Railway Station, Kerala. The museum was established in 1885 and is spread over an area of 5.5 hectors of land. Kerala State Museum complex houses an Art Section with a collection of sculptures, religious idols, Kathakali figures, traditional jewellery of the state and traditional lamps. There is also a Natural History Museum which displays a collection of different animals. The Zoological and Botanical Garden are located in this compound. It is open all days at 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM except Mondays.
Thrissur Zoo, which lies adjacent to the Thrissur Art Museum, is famous for its collection of snakes such as King Cobras, Kraits, Pythons, Vipers and Rat Snakes. Besides, tigers, lions, tailed macaque, sloth bear and various species of deer and many birds are seen here. Visitor timings are from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, except on Mondays.
Shakthan Thampuran Palace
Located near the Vadakkumnathan Temple, Shakthan Thampuran Palace is 2 km from Thrissur Railway Station in Kerala. The palace features various interesting and outstanding attributes of the former rulers of Cochin. Also known as ‘Thoppu’, Sakthan Thampuran Palace narrates the history of Thrissur which was the old capital of Kochi Kingdom. A two storey building, the palace is built in the traditional ‘Naalukkettu’ style with high roofs, thick walls and Italian marbled floors. A serpent grove, which is meant for worship of serpents, is also present here. The museum housed in the Sakthan Thampuran Palace features different galleries such as Bronze gallery, Sculpture gallery, Epigraphy gallery, gallery for Household Utensils, Numismatics gallery, History gallery and Megalithic gallery is another attraction here. At the north-eastern part of the palace is an archaeological garden.
Thrissur Town Hall - Art Gallery
Thrissur Town Hall houses the picture Gallery where mural paintings from all parts of Kerala are on display. This art gallery is also known as ‘Chitralayam’.
